About ASEC

The American Society for Emergency Contraception (ASEC) is a voluntary collaboration of organizations working to improve women's access to emergency contraception. ASEC's focus is on emergency contraception in the U.S., but also includes a number of international members. Founded in 1997, ASEC has four mandates:

  • To serve as a source of information on EC for the media and others;
  • To serve as a watchdog for inaccurate or biased articles in the press and respond with accurate letters to the editor, and to watch for abuses of reproductive rights related to emergency contraception and draw attention to these problems;
  • To promulgate policies on emergency contraception and to support and disseminate the statements and guidelines of other organizations willing to endorse the method; and
  • To bring together organizations and individuals working on emergency contraception, primarily by sending out (in collaboration with the international Consortium on Emergency Contraception) a semi-annual electronic newsletter on recent events in emergency contraception and by organizing an annual meeting to share information with researchers, policy makers and the pharmaceutical industry.

The American Society for Emergency Contraception is made possible by a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
